Create a database clone using an open backup

The following is backup and recovery tip #3 from "30 tips in 30 minutes," brought to you by the IOUG. Return to the main page for more tips on this topic.

You can create a duplicate of a database from an open database backup. To do so:

1. Create an open backup
2. Create a trace of the control file
3. Move the backup datafiles to the target location (directory or machine)
4. Edit the create file control script
5. Run the create control file script from SQL*Plus as SYSDBA
6. Recover the database using archive logs
7. Open the database reset logs
