Oracle's buying spree continued unabated Thursday with the company acquiring GoldenGate Software Inc., specialists in real-time data integration, for an undisclosed amount.
Coupled with its own data integration products Oracle believes GoldenGate's technology will form a broader, more comprehensive data integration platform that will attract a wider variety of developers. Some observers believe the deal will also strengthen Oracle's competitive position against IBM and SAP.
Oracle expects corporate IT shops to benefit from the deal through improved real-time data movement, replication and synchronization across multiple heterogeneous systems that will result in better business intelligence along with higher availability of business class applications.
"The need to improve operating performance in a global 24 by7 environment has led to the need for data integration to support real-time and high availability capabilities," said Hasan Rizvi, senior vice president Oracle Fusion Middleware Product Development in a prepared statement.
What inspired the deal, according to Oracle officials, is the increased demand for significantly improved business performance. Consequently, they said corporate users have elevated real-time data integration that supports high availability and the need for real-time information has become mission critical to them.
"They've been working with datanomics for some time," said Ray Wang, vice president at principal analyst with Forrester Research, Inc. in Cambridge. "There continues to be a huge demand for real time data integration because users demand more actionable insight as more of their mission critical data resides in the cloud. This acquisition removes some dependencies Oracle may have had on OEMs and some competitor products."
Strengths of the GoldenGate products include their ability to extend high availability and disaster tolerance while supporting real-time integration and improving performance and scalability. Officials from both companies believe applications that need to run continuously without interruption, such as online banking, claims processing and online shopping can best benefit from these capabilities.
Other capabilities of GoldenGate's products benefitting corporate customers include maintaining uptime of business critical database and applications during migrations and upgrades, providing zero downtime when migrating and or upgrading mission critical applications, and real-time feeds to Oracle business intelligence and enterprise performance management thereby enabling better business insights.
The deal is expected to close sometime later this year. In the meantime GoldenGate will continue to operate independently.
