Find out what happened with Oracle's Red Hat Challenge

Oracle expanded on two key initiatives at the LinuxWorld conference being held this week in San Francisco -- Oracle VM and Oracle Unbreakable Linux.

Oracle is making the installation of Oracle VM easier -- at least for some. It is releasing a series of preconfigured templates for deploying software on its server virtualization technology.

The templates include configurations for Oracle Database 11g, Oracle Enterprise Manager, Oracle Siebel CRM 8.0 and Oracle Enterprise Linux.

"All four of these products can be deployed as Oracle VM templates, thereby bypassing the installation process," said Monica Kumar, senior director of Linux and open source product marketing.

The templates should save customers anywhere from a few days to a few weeks of effort, according to Wim Coekaerts, vice president of Linux engineering at Oracle.

Where customers once had to begin an Oracle VM upgrade by reading a lengthy user manual, they can now download a file with an IP address and a password.

"The reason for this is -- say you're a new customer and you want to start with these things," Coekaerts said. "Since we have the whole stack, you can get Oracle VM from us and Enterprise Linux from us. It's a completely configured component stack. It's all right there."

Linux momentum

Oracle said its partner network is embracing Oracle's Enterprise Linux, announcing that more than a dozen partners have joined the Linux Support Program.

Oracle has also added a product focus area on the Oracle Partner Network for Linux, facilitating Linux support reselling and application certification on Oracle Enterprise Linux. Oracle Enterprise Linux is fully compatible with Red Hat, which Oracle announced plans to support two years ago.

"The way our program works is that any partner certified with Red Hat is fully certified on Oracle Red Hat Linux," Kumar said. "They have been able to rapidly and easily support Oracle Enterprise Linux, fully compatible with Red Hat Enterprise Linux. Partners are finding it very easy to support."
