Oracle says that it will be talking a great deal about forthcoming upgrades to its Enterprise Manager 10g product at next week's Oracle OpenWorld.

The company says the upgrades will be offered in the form of three new Oracle Application Management Packs that will give Enterprise Manager the ability to manage and monitor Oracle's E-Business Suite, Siebel and PeopleSoft Enterprise business applications.

Jay Rossiter, Oracle's vice president of system management products, said the management pack for PeopleSoft Enterprise will be ready within 30 days, followed by the other two in the spring of 2007.

"We'll be demonstrating these things on the [OpenWorld] campground and some of it may show up in some of the keynotes as well," Rossiter said. "It will be all over the place."

Enterprise manager provides users with service level management, application performance management, configuration management, and change automation that would otherwise have to be handled manually, Rossiter said. The software supports Oracle applications running on Oracle and non-Oracle databases, according to the company.

Enterprise manager competes directly with similar offerings from the likes of Hewlett-Packard, BMC Software and IBM.

Oracle says that extending Enterprise Manager's capabilities are part of the firm's promise to seamlessly integrate the spoils of its many acquisitions -- including the purchases of Siebel Systems and PeopleSoft Corp. -- into a single platform.

Oracle says the Enterprise Manager's improved application performance management features let administrators monitor their entire application environment and identify the causes of problems.

Additionally, the configuration management capabilities in Enterprise Manager and its upcoming Management Packs lets users track and validate system changes and take snapshots of systems to prevent configuration issues from arising, according to Oracle.

The systems' automation capabilities enable administrators to streamline labor-intensive processes such as patching software and cloning staging environments, Rossiter said.

Rossiter said the new PeopleSoft Enterprise pack will let users perform domain management actions such as start, stop and purge cache from the console. They'll also be able to carry out configuration management tasks through a meta-driven user interface.

Oracle OpenWorld runs from Sunday through Thursday of next week at the Moscone Convention Center in San Francisco.
