Nearly a month after Oracle Corp. introduced its Oracle Fusion for SAP -- or "OFF SAP" -- a stream of SAP R/3 customers have reportedly expressed interest in Oracle applications, the company said in a release today.

To date, Oracle said more than 230 companies have registered with the Oracle OFF SAP program. According to the company, many have also expressed interest in migrating from legacy SAP to Oracle applications.

Oracle attributed the migration to an aversion to re-licensing and re-implementing its applications in order to upgrade from R/3 to mySAP ERP or mySAP Business Suite.

It is another example of how the California-based Oracle has butted heads with its German rival SAP AG. Previously, the two companies entered into a bidding war for retail software vendor Retek Inc., which Oracle eventually acquired for an undisclosed amount.

On a second front, SAP is in the process of wooing PeopleSoft Inc. customers, who are now faced with a choice after Oracle acquired PeopleSoft earlier this year: switch to the recently issued Oracle Fusion road map or jump ship to SAP's NetWeaver platform.

A report from Boston-based Yankee Group released in March showed that 46% of PeopleSoft customers indicated they were considering switching from their current applications. SAP is expected to woo those potential customers in the coming months with discounts and migration programs of its own.

One such program, SAP's Safe Passage, was launched in January aimed at PeopleSoft and J.D. Edwards customers. The rebate program was extended to retailers and small and mid sized businesses and provides a conversion credit of up to 75% of the original PeopleSoft or J.D. Edwards software licensing fees to be used toard licensing of SAP;s enterprise resource planning software, SAP said.

Oracle countered last month with its own incentives -- like a 100% license credit for SAP R/3 customers if they switch -- which have been heavily marketed by the database giant over the past 30 days.
