Oracle Corp.'s Enterprise Grid Alliance (EGA) has added three new members to its ranks, including its first end user, adding clout to its effort to produce user-friendly tools and grid computing standards.

Ideally, it takes a global network of various people working with grid computing to form common standards, but this is a good step forward.

senior research analyst, Butler Group

Software maker Avarsys Inc., Dell Inc. and UBS Investment Bank were added to the list of members, bringing the group's tally to 25, according to Donald Deutsch, the EGA's president and vice president of standards strategy and architecture at Oracle.

To address the lack of applications integration standards for grid environments, Oracle in April formed the alliance, a group of major software vendors dedicated to setting standards for commercial applications of grid computing.

Oracle last year began making grid computing a central theme to its technology strategy with the release of its latest database model, 10g.

An expanded grid alliance is essential to advancing grid computing, said Mark Blowers, a senior research analyst with the Butler Group, a U.K.-based research firm. It is helpful to have as many software makers and users as possible on board to develop clear standards, Blowers said.

"To harness the interoperability capable of meeting the benefits of a grid architecture takes standards from all the players involved," Blowers said. "Ideally, it takes a global network of various people working with grid computing to form common standards, but this is a good step forward."

Alpharetta, Ga.-based Avarsys provides enterprise grid computing, clustered and data management application, and infrastructure products. Avarsys is the first value-added reseller to join the EGA, demonstrating the potential for enterprise grid computing in the technology sales channel, Deutsch said.

"Our goal is to create developer and user-friendly grid computing tools and standards essential for advancing grid computing," Deutsch said. "The new membership is vital to helping enterprise grid computing reach its full potential."

Dell has worked closely with Oracle, bundling Oracle's database software with its x86-based servers. Deutsch said developing standardized architectures for grid is important for better performance and improved efficiencies.

Over the last two years, UBS has implemented and operated an enterprise grid computing architecture.

The Enterprise Grid Alliance also includes EMC Corp., Fujitsu Siemens Computers BV, Hewlett-Packard Co., NEC Corp., Network Appliance Inc. and Sun Microsystems Inc.
