QUESTION POSED ON: 02 June 2008 I have a 10g RAC (Redhat) 2-node system using ASM for management of the Oracle files on our EMC San. What is the best tape backup strategy to use to backup the database and nodes for this RAC system? Can you recommend a backup product to use? E.g., Backup Exec, EMC Networker, etc.

I would recommend using Oracle's RMAN to back up ASM RAC databases. RMAN will normally backup directly to disk at which point you can have whatever utility you want copy the backup to tape. If you want RMAN to backup directly to tape, then you will have to use a third-party application which connects RMAN to the third part backup solution. For instance, if I use Legato for my tape backups, then I would obtain the Legato Networker Module for Oracle to get RMAN to talk directly with Legato. I think that EMC has a similar solution but I know of no such product with Backup Exec.
