QUESTION POSED ON: 18 July 2007
I want to know what to do to be sure that a migration from Oracle 8i to Oracle 9i has been successfully done. Is it possible to import a .dmp file exporting from Windows 2003 Server to a server running RedHat Linux?

For your migration, please read the Oracle 9i Migration Guide. Chapter 4 details what to do after the upgrade is complete. After all that, it is my opinion that you will never really know if you are successful or not until the application is exercised and the end users are happy with the results.

It is possible to import a dump file on one platform to an Oracle database on another platform. In fact, this may be your only option for migrating between different platforms. When you FTP the dump file, make sure you explicitly transfer the file in BINARY mode.
