QUESTION POSED ON: 11 July 2007 My path to becoming a DBA is a bit different and I was wondering if you could help me a bit more. I took an Oracle boot camp training camp (one week) with no computer experience so I ended up studying with the DVDs in order to obtain my OCP. That was five years ago and I have no practical experience. I am returning to a community college in Dallas which offers a DBA certificate and an Oracle associate certificate. What else can I do to better my chances of getting a job? Thanks for your time.

With no IT experience, it is going to be very tough landing a job as a DBA. You may end up having to take a different IT job and working your way up the ladder. Otherwise, do anything you can database-related. Hook up with a local Oracle users group and interact with the professionals there. You may find a job lead through them. An alternative is to use something like MySpace.com (or other networking sites) to reach out to see if you can find something there.
