QUESTION POSED ON: 09 July 2007
Good morning sir,

I have seen your suggestions for further development so I thought that your suggestions might help me also. Basically, I have been in IT from 2000 onwards with Microsoft technologies. Unfortunately I have switched over to Oracle technologies with minimum knowledge and have been working as a programmer for one year. Now I am confused about whether I can continue with Oracle technologies or shift to Microsoft technologies. Because I don't have the idea regarding Oracle technologies like opportunities and further development in life. If you tell me to continue in Oracle please give the suitable sites such that I can continue with Oracle.

EXPERT RESPONSE

From the information you have provided, I would be hard pressed to tell you whether to continue with Oracle technologies or try to go back to Microsoft. Both have a very high market share, and both will provide you a solid career path. The real question has to be, what do you want to do? If you are not comfortable with Oracle and want to go back to Microsoft, then you have already answered your own question. If you want to continue with Oracle and are looking for a career path, you can continue with Oracle development tools, and you can ultimately train to become a DBA.

There are hundreds of Web sites you can go to for more Oracle developer information (just Google it). In addition to SearchOracle.com, I would suggest starting with Oracle Technet or the Oracle development tools user group. In addition, sign up for free magazines such as Oracle Magazine and any newsletters or user groups you can find in your area.

I hope this helps.
