QUESTION POSED ON: 24 May 2007

Brian, I think there was an earlier chain where you answered this, but I wanted to make sure I understood.

I am setting up a seven-node RAC environment (10gR2) on Linux and will be using ASM. I am new to ASM and relatively new to RMAN as well, having worked with EMC Timefinder in my previous environment to clone DBs.

I plan to set up a Flash Recovery Area (also ASM), but I'm concerned about how I can get the backups off to tape.

My company uses Veritas Netbackup, but I assume since the underlying devices are RAW, Netbackup won't be able to get to the data that is backed up in the Flash Recovery Area.

From what I have read, "Native operating system commands such as Linux cp or Windows COPY cannot write or read files in Automated Storage Management (ASM) storage."

So, is the only option to back up directly to a cooked filesystem (possibly NFS mounted) using RMAN commands?

Would "backup recovery area" work to get a copy to some other "cooked" filesystem (again possibly NFS mounted) that could be used by Veritas Netbackup?

Thank you.

EXPERT RESPONSE
I would create a backup somewhere on a cooked file system if I wanted to copy that backup to tape. You are correct in that your OS utilities will not be able to pull your backup files from the ASM disks. The best you can do if you backup to ASM is to do a binary-level copy of the entire disk device, but that is probably not what you want to do. Your backup disk device can be NFS mounted if you choose.
