QUESTION POSED ON: 23 May 2007 I need to do an upgrade from Oracle 8i to 10g. Currently, the 8i database interfaces with VB 6.0. I'm wondering whether 10g and VB 6.0 are compatible or do I need to switch to .NET? Thanks.

EXPERT RESPONSE
Migrating from Oracle 8i to 10g is a fairly significant step. No doubt, there will be some application-related changes to make either because of compatibility or performance. You will likely have to upgrade your Oracle client which may also force additional application changes. Unfortunately, I am not a VB or .NET expert so I can't really say whether upgrading to Oracle 10g will necessitate a change in application technology from VB 6.0 to .NET. I would, however, encourage you to contact other IT professionals in your local Oracle users group. You can also open a SR with Oracle Support and ask this question. Finally, thorough, documented and exhaustive testing of your database migration in conjunction with your application support teams and business users will help determine whether moving to .NET is justified.
