I would like to know the kind of performance issues we will find after upgrading to Oracle 10g Database. What are the key parameter settings required and what sort of features do we really need for getting better performance? Our database size is 2.5 terabytes.

There is some vital information missing from your question:

  • From which release are you upgrading -- Oracle8i, Oracle9i?
  • What types of applications does the database support? Data warehouse? Transactional system with high volume?

    There are no clear-cut answers to what changes to make in terms of database parameters. What changes you make will depend on what type of database this is. What helps to answer this question is exhaustive testing in a non-production environment. Only with thorough, documented testing can you identify any potential bottlenecks as a result of the upgrade and resolve them prior to performing the upgrade in a production environment.

As well, the Oracle Database 10g Release 2 (10.2) Upgrade Guide provides helpful information on upgrading options, and lists deprecated initialization parameters which may impact database performance.
