QUESTION POSED ON: 19 April 2007
Becoming an Oracle professional is my dream. In February 2003, I successfully passed two exams to become an Oracle Certified Associate (Oracle9i: Database Administration). At that time, I did not have a four-year degree but I immediately began searching for an entry-level job (related to Oracle). After a year and a half into my unsuccessful job search, I became discouraged. So I decided to go back to school to earn a bachelor's degree in computer information systems at a local college. Three years later, I am currently a senior and in May 2008 I will have a four-year degree along with an OCA certification. I am currently looking for an entry-level job (related to Oracle) to start gaining (REAL) experience. Unfortunately, my job search to find entry-level work has been very unsuccessful again. I have been applying for jobs but I am not getting any responses. Is this normal for a person to go through this type of situation? What is the best way to change my current situation that will lead to job interviews/offers? Should I wait until I get my degree along with my certification to start searching for an entry-level job?

It is very tough to break into the DBA field these days. The market is very competitive. The best advice I can give is to take a job as a developer or systems administrator where you think you can work your way towards becoming a DBA. Most DBAs take one of these two paths. It is rare one jumps from college right into becoming a DBA.

On my Web site I have a white paper titled "Grow That DBA Career." This will contain other pointers to help you out.
