QUESTION POSED ON: 30 January 2007
I perform daily hot backups. If I shut down the instance and perform a file system backup weekly, do I really need an Oracle cold backup in addition?

>
EXPERT RESPONSE
You do not need a cold backup in addition to the hot backup. You only need one backup (hot or cold) and the archived redo logs to restore the database to the current point in time. However, if you are performing a file system backup and back up the database at that time (cold), then it is not hurting anything and it gives you one more backup to use during recovery.
