QUESTION POSED ON: 07 December 2006
My entire development involves COM+ and .NET and C++. I am anticipating high database traffic and data. Which would be a wiser choice, Oracle 10g or SQL Server 2005? I have even heard that RAC is yet not a tested solution.

Interesting question and unfortunately there is no right answer to this one, mainly because the choice of database may be dependent on your company's preferred vendor, your in-house skills, your preferred hardware/OS choice and to a certain extent the choice of your development environment. Both databases are capable of hosting multi-terabyte databases, more so with Oracle than SQL Server.

The main points you need to bear in mind are:

  1. Ensure that the server has enough memory and power to handle the transactions per second you plan to put through.
  2. Ensure that you use RAID 0+1 (stripped and mirror) as your storage option.
  3. Your database design will also play a crucial role in overall performance of your database.
