Interesting question and unfortunately there is no right answer to this one, mainly because the choice of database may be dependent on your company's preferred vendor, your in-house skills, your preferred hardware/OS choice and to a certain extent the choice of your development environment. Both databases are capable of hosting multi-terabyte databases, more so with Oracle than SQL Server.
The main points you need to bear in mind are:
- Ensure that the server has enough memory and power to handle the transactions per second you plan to put through.
- Ensure that you use RAID 0+1 (stripped and mirror) as your storage option.
- Your database design will also play a crucial role in overall performance of your database.
