QUESTION POSED ON: 06 June 2006
I have taken snapshots at intervals of 10:00, 10:30, 11:00, 11:30, 12:00, etc. For creating the report, do I need to create separate reports between 10:00 and 10:30, 10:30 and 11:00, etc., or can I create a single report between 10:00 and 12:00? What is the difference?

EXPERT RESPONSE
When you create a report, you can specify any beginning and ending snapshots so long as the database did not go down some time between those time periods. The report will basically subtract statistics in the beginning snapshot from the same stats in the ending snapshot. The result is called a "delta." These delta values are used to characterize the performance and the workload on your system between two snapshots. If you generate the report using the 10:00 and 10:30 snapshots, you will be looking at 30 minutes of activity. If you generate a report using the 10:00 and 12:00 snapshots, you will be looking at two hours of activity. The difference is that the second report contains all of the activity noted in the first report, plus the next hour and a half of activity.
