To use Oracle's export and import utilities to upgrade your database from 8i to 10g, follow these steps:
- Install the Oracle 10g database software into a separate ORACLE_HOME.
- Create a starter 10g database with the appropriate application tablespaces created.
- Export the Oracle8i database.
- Import the Oracle8i database into the newly created 10g database.
Be sure to test this process more than once in a non-production environment, and also ensure that the applications supported by your database are tested each time the upgrade is tested. For more information, refer to the Oracle 10g Database Release 2 Upgrade Guide.
Note that if your database is currently at release 8.1.7.4, a direct upgrade to 10g release 2 is supported. This method allows you to upgrade your database in place either using the DBUA (Database Upgrade Assistant) or manually using provided scripts.
