QUESTION POSED ON: 05 June 2006
I would like to upgrade from 8.1.7 to 10g. How to use the import utility to import the 8i dump to the 10g database?

>

To use Oracle's export and import utilities to upgrade your database from 8i to 10g, follow these steps:

  • Install the Oracle 10g database software into a separate ORACLE_HOME.
  • Create a starter 10g database with the appropriate application tablespaces created.
  • Export the Oracle8i database.
  • Import the Oracle8i database into the newly created 10g database.

Be sure to test this process more than once in a non-production environment, and also ensure that the applications supported by your database are tested each time the upgrade is tested. For more information, refer to the Oracle 10g Database Release 2 Upgrade Guide.

Note that if your database is currently at release 8.1.7.4, a direct upgrade to 10g release 2 is supported. This method allows you to upgrade your database in place either using the DBUA (Database Upgrade Assistant) or manually using provided scripts. For more information on how to determine the best upgrade path for your situation, refer to the Upgrade Guide mentioned above.
