QUESTION POSED ON: 05 October 2005 I am an instructor at a community college in Florida. We are teaching
an "Oracle Database Performance Tuning" class. I am trying to locate
one document that can be referenced with all of the target values for
performance statistics. Do you know of one such document? I have been
using the Oracle online documentation. However the information seems to
be scattered throughout multiple manuals. For example, we are
discussing tuning the PGA for "shared server" mode. I cannot find
information on the preferred settings for the different work areas (for
shared server mode).
Thanks for your help!

EXPERT RESPONSE
The best place to start is the Performance Tuning Guide. The Oracle 10g version (you didn't give your Oracle version, so this may not be completely applicable to your situation) contains detailed instructions on how to size the PGA and the large pool, which contains most of the PGA in shared server configurations. You can use the PGA advice feature of 9i or 10g to arrive at an appropriate value for PGA_AGGREGATE_TARGET and then ensure that your large pool is adequately sized to accommodate the PGA for shared server.
