QUESTION POSED ON: 14 September 2005
How can I configure a link between Oracle 8i and MS SQL Server 2000? I need to execute some stored procedures in SQL Server from Oracle. My platform is SCO UnixWare, Oracle 8i, Windows 2000 Server, SQL Server 2000.

EXPERT RESPONSE
You could use Transparent Gateways (called Hetergeneous Services in 8i) for creating a database link from Oracle to SQL Server. However, you will not be able to execute a stored procedure on that server. If the stored procedure's job is to just return data like a query, then rewrite your stored procedure as a view and query the SQL Server view. If your stored procedure peforms some other functionality, then you will have to figure out a way to instruct SQL Server to run that stored procedure. One option is to have Oracle insert data through the database link to a SQL Server table. Then have a routine job in SQL Server pick up that data and if the data is found, run the stored procedure.
