EXPERT RESPONSE
Unfortunately, I do not have an answer for you. In all of my years in
this business, I have yet to see any scientific method (that was worth
anything) to be able to size hardware adequately. Typically, the
approach that works the best is to employ someone's services who has
tons of experience with these sorts of things.
Oracle 10g does make the process easier with grid computing. Instead of
buying one monster database server, purchase a few small Linux boxes
and cluster the database with Oracle's Real Application Clusters (RAC).
If this configuration is too small, add another node or two to the
cluster. If the configuration becomes too big, remove a node from your
cluster and devote that hardware to another project. It is this
"computing on demand" model that is rapidly becoming attractive to
businesses.
