QUESTION POSED ON: 07 June 2005
I am new to Oracle, but I am learning fast. I am running Oracle 9.2.0.1.0 on a Windows 2000 Server service pack 4. This is a test machine for me to use with another piece of software. I am logged into my database AS SYSDBA. I have to do a restore of the database. When I go to Backup Management and try to do a recovery it tells me:
Using preferred credentials, the following error occurred:
 ORA-01031:insufficient privileges.
How do I fix this and be able to do a recovery?

The most common cause for this is that your password file is missing or corrupt. Use the ORAPWD utility to recreate the password file, then ensure that your parameter file has the REMOTE_LOGIN_PASSWORDFILE=EXCLUSIVE value set it in. You should be able to connect as SYSDBA with SYS and perform your restore.
