QUESTION POSED ON: 29 November 2004
I am able to connect to a specific database after logging onto Unix and then running SQL*Plus. However, whenever I try to log in to this remotely from my desktop(using SQL*Plus/toad), I keep getting "ORA-01017: invalid username/password." No matter which user ID and password I try, I get the same error. I am able to log in to other databases on other servers from my desktop. Any help is greatly appreciated.

The userid and password do not match for the database you are trying to connect to. The first thing I would do is to contact my DBA and have him or her ensure that the userid/password combination is correct for that database. If that does not fix the problem, then the most likely cause is that you are not connecting to the database you think you are. This can happen when your TNSNAMES.ORA network configuration file is defined incorrectly. Verify that the TNS entry in that config file is pointing to the correct host, port, and database.
