QUESTION POSED ON: 11 October 2004
I need to create an index for over 332 million of records. The question is, how can I calculate the space needed to create the index? Actually, Oracle gives me the ORA-01652 error, and it says that there isn't enough space in tablespace TEMP. So, I need to know how much free space to allocate in TEMP to create the index.

>
When you create the index, Oracle performs a full table scan, collecting the smbolic key and ROWID for each row in the table. Plus, Oracle writes the TEMP segments in discontiguous segments. A rough estimate is to multiply the ROWID*symbolic_key*num_rows, times a fudge factor of 1.5.
