You do not need to backup the online redo log under any circumstances.
In fact, Oracle's RMAN utility does not backup the online redo logs no matter which backup you attempt. There are three primary reasons why you do not back these up (and if you do back them up, do not ever restore them). First, all information in the online redo logs will be found in the archived redo logs, eventually. Second, unlike hot backups of database data files, there is no mechanism in place to resolve any inconsistencies when backing up a live online redo log. The backup simply cannot be trusted. Three, the online redo logs should be multiplexed. If you lose one, you have another copy.
