Is the number of processes causing listener error?

TNS-12500: TNS:listener failed to start a dedicated server process
 TNS-12540: TNS:internal limit restriction exceeded
  TNS-12560: TNS:protocol adapter error
   TNS-00510: Internal limit restriction exceeded
    IBM/AIX RISC System/6000 Error: 11: Resource temporarily unavailable

We are receiving the above-error in our listener log. Max number of processes per user on the server is set at 600, and max number of process in Oracle is 600. Max utilization on the processes is 482 and max utilization on sessions is 490. The number of sessions is set to 840.

From what I'm reading, it appears to me the number of processes is fine. We have confirmed that our paging space is setup incorrectly on this box, yet someone is telling me to increase the number of processes in the init. I disagree. Am I overlooking something?

The TNS-510 error means that too many files or sockets open simultaneously (or some other resource has been depleted). This is an OS limitation, not an Oracle limitation. You need to be sure that your AIX platform can handle as many files as you want to open on your server. This is *all* files, not just Oracle database files. And you need to make sure that your AIX server is set up to correctly handle the total number of Oracle processes, not just dedicated server processes. The PROCESSES Oracle initialization parameter limits the number of dedicated server processes. But there are background processes (SMON, PMON, LGWR, etc) and processes to support parallel statements, not too mention your Listener, etc. It sounds to me like you need to configure AIX to allow more processes per Unix user.
