QUESTION POSED ON: 12 October 2005
I'm having problems with Oracle 10g: I installed it on my Windows XP computer and haven't installed client. I logged in through SQL*Plus and executed "shutdown." It hung up, so I turned off my computer. After I turned on the computer again, I couldn't get in through SQL*Plus (the error I get is ORA-12514) or enterprise manager (the error is ORA-12505). I checked the service; the instance is startup. The stranger thing is that I can't even open the LISTENER.ORA and TNSNAMES.ORA files in %ORACLE_HOME%networkadmin. How can this be solved?

EXPERT RESPONSE
Try using the START-run option to use the cmd command to get to the command line. At the command line execute the lsnrctl status command. Also try the lsnrctl stop and the lsnrctl start commands.

If you can get the listener up, then use the "set" command to set the oracle_sid variable to your database sid. Once the sid is set, use the commands:

Sqlplus /nolog
Connect / as sysdba
Startup
