QUESTION POSED ON: 15 June 2004
Are you in favor of using some third party security tools to implement/monitor database security for Oracle databases? If yes, could you please mention some of the best DB security tools in the market?

EXPERT RESPONSE
If you ask 10 people to "implement and monitor database security" you will get 10 different methods and each of them will probably focus on different areas and leave some areas completely unprotected.

Database security tools are useful to you if you know what it is that you're trying to secure and have defined requirements for your environment and application. In my opinion, Oracle provides sufficient security for almost every environment -- if you configure it properly. A network firewall provides no protection if it is misconfigured and the same rule applies to databases.
