What is SOA and what are its benefits?

I want to know, what is SOA and what are its benefits?
There are many explanations of what SOA is and its benefits. From an architecture/design viewpoint, it allows two different systems which may be hosted in totally different platforms, written in different languages, etc., to communicate with each other over the Internet using XML. Each system does not need to be aware where the other system resides.

For starters I suggest you take a look at this SOA article.
