Upgrade to 9i or 10g with Apps 11.5.6
We're running Apps 11.5.6 on Database 8.1.7.3. We're currently planning an upgrade to 11.5.10. Our support partners are recommending that we move to database 9.2.0.7.
  1. We want to understand why we wouldn't go to 10g as that is the latest database. Are there good reasons for this?
  2. Will 9i be desupported sooner than 10g?
Of course I am also asking these questions to our support partners but I wanted an independant view as well. Thanks in advance.

After reviewing Oracle's certification matrix, it appears that Oracle Apps 11.5.10 is supported with both Oracle9i release 2 and Oracle Database 10g release 2 so, in theory, you could migrate to 10g. Because I do not know what operating system your database and application tier reside on, I looked at both Solaris and Linux as examples. This is true for both of these operating systems. Having said that, there is likely a very good reason for your support partners to recommend Oracle 9.2.0.7. I would recommend that you discuss this with your support partners to determine why they are suggesting Oracle 9.2.0.7.

In terms of database support, Oracle recently announced its "Oracle Lifetime Support" model. For as along as you license your Oracle database, there are varying levels of support available. Under this support model, for Oracle9i release 2 premier support ends July 2007 and extended support ends July 2010. For Oracle Database 10g release 2, premier support ends July 2010 and extended support ends July 2013. Sustaining support for both of these database releases is indefinite.

For more information on this support model, visit Oracle's Web site. Specific support information can be found here.
