I have a project to upgrade a database from 8i to 9i for an application. Now I must estimate what to do, effects of the upgrade, how many days for the project. Could you help me to solve it? Thank you very much.

This is a difficult question to answer simply because I have very little information about what type of applications are supported by the Oracle database you are planning to upgrade. My advice would be to test the upgrade process in a non-production environment several times. Be sure to involve your application support teams and business users in the testing process. This is the only way you will be able to adequately test the effects of the upgrade, and resolve problems prior to attempting this in a production environment. Time spent testing is never wasted.

Next, you must determine how you are going to perform the upgrade. Will you be creating a new Oracle 9.2 database, and then importing the 8i database schemas into it? Will you upgrade the database in place with either the DBUA (Database Upgrade Assistant) or manually? There are several options for performing and upgrade. Which one you choose will depend on how large the database is, and how long of an outage you can afford to take for this upgrade.

The Oracle9i Database Migration Guide provides a very good step-by-step process for database migration. As well as providing very good technical details about the upgrade process itself, there is also good advice regarding any preparatory and post-migration tasks.
