"TNS:Could not resolve Service name" error

I've installed Oracle9i in Windows XP, and when I try to connect through SQL*Plus it gives me an error: "TNS:Could not resolve Service name." I connected using scott and tiger. I even tried through svrmgrl in the command prompt. There I get a different error.

I've installed Oracle9i in Windows XP, and when I try to connect through SQL*Plus it gives me an error: "TNS:Could not resolve Service name." I connected using scott and tiger. I even tried through svrmgrl in the command prompt. There it gives me the error as "Message 4505 not found; No message file for product=RDBMS, Facility=MGR. ORA-12560:TNS:Protocol Adapter Error." Please help.

This message indicates that the ORACLE_HOME environment variable is either set incorrectly in the registry or in the environment (Control Panel -> System -> Environment).

You could try removing the ORACLE_HOME environment variable from Control Panel -> System -> Environment. Alternatively, ensure that ORACLE_HOME is set to the correct destination in the registry (in HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\ORACLE\HOME<x> where <x> is the unique identifier of the ORACLE_HOME).
