Q

SQL*Net basics

What is SQL*Net and why do I need it? Can I download it or do I have to buy and have a license for it? Is it easy to install and do I have to know some settings or server names before installing. SQL*Net is the old name for Oracle's networking software. The newer name is Net8 or simply Oracle Net. This software lets applications connect and talk to an Oracle database. When you purchase the Oracle RDBMS software, you automatically get...

the Oracle networking software.

In order to install it, you need to install, at a minimum, the Oracle Client software. And you'll have to fire up the GUI wizard which lets you configure your network configuration files. This wizard will start automatically at the end of your software install.
