My Windows NT and also my Oracle 7.5 database got corrupted. I have the backups of the database. I had installed Oracle 8i after installing the NT. Can the Oracle 7.5 backups be restored to Oracle 8i? I lost all of my archive logs and redo files. If the restore is possible, can you explain the process?

You cannot do a direct restore from one version of Oracle to a newer version. If you have a cold backup, then you can perform the following:

1. Restore your database datafiles, control files, and online redo logs to your server.

2. Point your environment to your Oracle 8i software.

3. Use the migration utility to migrate your Oracle 7 database to Oracle 8i.

This document lists the detailed steps on performing an Oracle 7 -> Oracle 8i migration:

Once the migration is complete, you should be able to open your database as an Oracle 8i database.
