Q

Problems with Oracle 8i on Windows XP

I have installed Oracle 8i on Windows XP Professional. But on restarting my computer, I am facing the error, "ORA-01034: Oracle not available." I tried to check in administrative tools under that in services, and there it shows against the service database name as starting, and I am not able to set or change that mode. Please suggest what I need to do. There is no Alert log file in the system.

I would first suggest that you choose a supported configuration for Oracle. Oracle 8i is not certified to run on Win XP. The first server release certified for XP was 9.0.1. Check the certification matrix on Metalink to be sure.

If you continue to have problems with a supported, certified configuration, then I'd suggest recreating the database using the database configuration assistant.
