Q

Oracle or SQL Server for developing social networking site?

I am developing a social networking Web site and expext high traffic on the database. Which is a better option, Oracle or MS SQL Server?

I am developing a Web site of social networking, similar to orkut.com, and I expext high traffic on the database. I am developing in asp.net. Can you tell me which is a better option, Oracle or MS SQL Server 2005, and why?
This is quite a common question and unfortunately there is no right answer. I've worked with both databases and both are very capable. The main points you need to consider are (and in many ways these will dictate your choice):
  1. The overall hardware strategy within your organization.
  2. The skill base within your organization.
Having said this, from my experience on a very similar type of project, I found the MS SQL / .Net route to be slightly easier, mainly due to tighter integration between the database and development technologies.
