Q

Opening database with lost redo log files

We lost the redo*.log files. The database is unmounted. We got the message "ORA-01139 : RESETLOGS option only valid after an incomplete database recovery." How do we open the database again without losses? We don't have a backup of this specific database.

We lost the redo*.log files. The database is unmounted. I tried your solution:
STARTUP MOUNT
ALTER DATABASE OPEN RESETLOGS;
But we got here a message: "ORA-01139 : RESETLOGS option only valid after an incomplete database recovery." We were logged in as sys/sysdba. Our database is version 9i. How do we open the database again without great losses? We haven't a backup of this specific database.
The next thing to try is to force some sort of incomplete recovery:
STARTUP MOUNT
RECOVER DATABASE UNTIL CANCEL;
Reply CANCEL at the next prompt
ALTER DATABASE OPEN RESETLOGS;
The only difference here is you are telling Oracle to perform incomplete recovery, but you are cancelling right away so as to force incomplete recovery.
