Q

ORA-12545 and changing passwords

While installing Oracle 9i on the server side as well as on the client side, can we change the password for the default Oracle users 'System' and "sys", which have their default passwords as "manager" and "change_on_install" respectively? While installing Oracle 9i on the client side, we got error "ORA-12545" as invalid login user and password for either system/sys/scott.
The ORA-12545 error is not indicating that you have an incorrect username or password (that's ORA-01017). The 12545 error indicates that you most likely have a problem with your tnsnames.ora entry or your have a DNS error. If you think your tnsnames.ora entry is okay (and you configured it with the Net Manager tool--which helps ensure that the syntax is right), then make sure you can use ping to reach the host specified in the HOST portion of your tnsnames.ora entry. If that works okay, then see if you can use the tnsping utility to reach the tns alias. One of those two tests will likely fail in your case.
