ORA-06550 error when importing a 10.2 dmp file into a 9.2 database

An Oracle user asks Database Backup and Recovery expert Brian Peasland why they are getting the ORA-06550 error error when importing a 10.2 dmp file into a 9.2 database.

I have an Oracle 10.2.0.2 dmp file from another site. I need to import the data into a 9.2.0.6 database on HP-UX11.11. I cannot modify the export file nor do I have a 10.2 database to import into, but I do have the 10.2 software. Is there any way to import the 10.2 dmp file into a 9.2 database?

I attempted to import using the 9.2 software and it didn't recognize the dmp file. I then tried using 10.2 software

to import into the 9.2 database and received the error:

IMP-00058: ORACLE error 6550 encountered
ORA-06550: line 1, column 33:
PLS-00302: component 'SET_NO_OUTLINES' must be declared
ORA-06550: line 1, column 7:
PL/SQL: Statement ignored
IMP-00000: Import terminated unsuccessfully

Since the dump file was most likely created with the 10g exp utility, the only way I could import the dump file's contents would be to create a simple 10g database, then import the contents. Use the 9i exp utility to create a new dump file and then import into the 9i database. At this point, I would delete the 10g database I temporarily created.
