This is in response to your reply to the question about exclusive OR subtypes (posted 17 Sep 2002). You stated that you don't know of any declarative way to enforce this. I believe that check constraints can be placed on each of the dependent tables to prevent inserts or updates that create a row that has the same foreign key value that is already in any of the other dependent tables. I consider check constraints to be declarative statements.
