Migrating from 8i to 9i without using the export/import method

How to migrate a database from Oracle 8i to 9i? I don't want to use the export/import method. My database size is more than 1 TB.

With a database that size, you will likely have to perform the migration in place. At a very high level, here are the steps you should follow:

  • Install Oracle 9.2 in its own ORACLE_HOME and patch it to 9.2.0.7
  • Use either the Database Upgrade Assistant (DBUA) or perform the migration manually to get your Oracle 8i database migrated to release 9.2.

The Oracle9i Database Migration Release 2 (9.2) Guide available on Oracle's Technology Network Web site provides very detailed instructions for migrating a database in place. Remember to test all applications supported by this database thoroughly before performing this migration in a production environment.
