Errors running Oracle 8.0.5 on Win2000 and XP

I am running Oracle 8.0.5 on a Windows 2000 machine as well as an XP Pro machine. I received a "tns packet writer failure" error on both machines. I have done research on the Web about how to resolve this error but I haven't had any luck.
You won't find much on the Web because Oracle 8.0.5 is not supported on Windows 2000 or Windows XP Pro. People tend to shy away from uncertified combinations so there probably isn't much information on this on the web. The only versions certified for both Windows 2000 and XP Pro are Oracle 9i and 10g. You'll need to run one of those versions.
