Your problem is most likely that Oracle 8.0.5 is not certified for Windows XP. Weird errors like this occur when Oracle 8 or 8i software runs on XP platforms. In addition, the only XP platform that Oracle is certified for is the XP Professional platform. XP Home is not supported. Make sure that you are running certified combinations and I would bet that your problems go away!
