Error affecting nightly batch jobs

We have an instance on v8.1.6.0.0 on an HP-UX 11 server using the v8.1.7.0.0 listener. It had been working fine for the last two years. Now we receive the 'TNS-12542: TNS:address already in use" error a few times a month. This has an impact on our nightly batch jobs. Where do I start to resolve this?

Typically, this error occurs when the port that your Listener will listen on is already in use. Use the 'netstat' command to see if some other process us listening on that same port. Only one process can use a port at any time. So you'll have to resolve this port conflict.
