"Database not mounted" error

I received an error when trying to restore a previous incarnation in 10g without using a recovery catalog. The doc says to start up the database in nomount state. When trying to restore the control file required, the message returned is "database not mounted."

Do not use the SET UNTIL TIME command in your RMAN script. It is not needed to restore your control file. You only need this command if you are performing a point-in-time restore of your database datafiles.
