Q

Database instance not working after improper shutdown

We are running our ERP system on a Oracle 9i database on Windows 2000. Because of some fault in the UPS, our database server went down without a proper shutdown. Since then our database instance is not working. We are getting ORA-01033 error when our ERP application tries to connect to the database. How can we solve this problem?

The ORA-1033 error is telling you that the database is in the process of shutting down. To fix this problem, follow these steps:

  1. Fire up SQL*Plus and connect as SYSDBA
  2. SHUTDOWN ABORT
  3. STARTUP

The SHUTDOWN ABORT command will force the database to stop. The STARTUP command will start the database and apply recovery to any active transactions.
