Creating a test Oracle 10g database on Windows XP

I'm trying to manually create a test Oracle 10g database on Windows XP. I have setup my password file and initialization file. After registering the service, when I run the create database script I get the following error, "CREATE DATABASE trial02 ERROR at line 1: ORA-01034: ORACLE not available."
The first thing to do is to start the service in Windows. You cannot start the database without the service running. Once you have the service started, issue the following in a DOS window:

sqlplus /nolog
connect / as sysdba
startup nomount
CREATE DATABASE .......;

Your database must be started in NOMOUNT mode to be able to issue the CREATE DATABASE command.
