Configuring the TNSNAMES.ORA file

I have nine XP machines that will not log on to our database running Oracle 8i. I receive the 12154 TNS error, "cannot resolve service name." I was reading your advice on the TNSNAMES.ORA file. How do I configure it?

This is my first time working with Oracle. I have nine XP machines that will not log on to our database running Oracle 8i. I receive the 12154 TNS error, "cannot resolve service name." I was reading your advice on the TNSNAMES.ORA file. How do I configure it? Is this too vague?
The easiest way to configure the TNSNAMES.ORA file, for those not used to managing them, is to run the Net Configuration Assitant GUI tool provided with your Oracle client software. Fire it up and choose the option to configure a new TNS entry. You will need to know your database server's name, the port of that server's Oracle Listener and the database SID. Fill in the blanks with that information and the wizard will do the rest for you.
