Please let me know the steps to perform a cold backup for an Oracle 9i database which is on a Unix server.

A cold backup is the easiest backup to perform. The steps are as simple as follows:

  1. SHUTDOWN IMMEDIATE
  2. Use OS commands to copy all of your datafiles, control files and online redo logs to your backup destination.
  3. STARTUP

That's all there is to it. It is also a good idea to back up your parameter file, any password file and your database software. But these can be backed up with the database up and running.
