Q

Can't start instance after OS crash

We have an Oracle 8i database on our Windows 2000 server. Due to an OS crash we had to re-setup Windows 2000 on the server over the same setup. After the setup, everything worked the same as before, except we cannot start up the database. When we try to start the database instance from DBSTUDIO, it stops in the middle. I can log in as a SYSDBA but cannot start the instance. How can we recover the data from the database.
You'll need to find out why you cannot start the instance. There could be many reasons. So without guessing why your instance will not start, you'll have to look at your instance's Alert Log. Find your Alert Log, open it in a text editor, and see what error messages are being displayed when you try to start the instance. Those error messages are your clues to your resolution.
